Question

August 8, 2012

Ok, I need some help people.

Georgia is 14.5 months old and going through a rough napping phase.  Her nighttime sleep is fine (roughly 12 hours) and she starts her day around 7:30 and goes to bed at 7:30 as well.

Her nap used to be at 12:30 and she would sleep 2.5-3 hours typically.  She started napping badly so I moved it to 1 and that seemed to do the trick.

Now, I put her in bed at 1 and I'm lucky if I get 2 hours.  Usually it's 1.5 hours and she wakes up hysterical which is not normal for her.

I know something needs to change since she wakes up so cranky but I don't know what.  Should I put her in bed earlier (12 or 12:30) or later (1:30)?  I'm leaning towards earlier since waking up cranky usually means they are still tired.

Any mommas out there have any suggestions for me?!

Oddly enough, on vacation she slept better than she has at home.  I'm guessing her cousins just wore her out.  I was sad when we got home and the good napping did not continue!

And, I might add that yes she is teething (has gotten one of her four eye teeth) but pain meds don't make a difference so I don't think that's it.  Also, her allergies are REALLY bad right now but she isn't waking because of that (they seemingly were worse on vaca but she slept better).

I dunno, but I hope you share anything you find that works! Madison's doing the same thing right now. I'll let you know if we figure something out. Good luck!

Ugh that's no fun. Right now we are opposite of you. Naps are the best they've ever been and nights are HORRIBLE. Just trying to go with the flow ;-) Hope miss G starts to get back to her good naps SOON for you! Keep us updated!

That's so hard! Brynlee is 20 months and it was probably around 15 months that we had to move her nap up. If she goes down between 11:30 and 12 she will sleep longer and wake up happier! Of course, each little one is different. It's worth a shot though!

Has she seen her pediatrician and had her ears checked? If she has a lot of drainage from allergies, she may have fluid to her ears that is bothering her. This can cause babies to not sleep well and wake up grumpy. Just a thought. Best wishes for a more restful nap!

Have you taken her to the peds lately for a checkup? If so I would let them know & let them check out the things you may not know or see to the normal eye that could be going wrong but until then try her nap time around 30 minutes earlier & see if that does the trick :)

Hmm, that's tough! I'd try moving her nap 30 minutes to an hour earlier. If I miss Grace's cues for her being tired she often doesn't nap as well.

Poor baby! Definitely try earlier.

She typically gets up anywhere from 7-8 and goes to bed at 8. She probably could go to bed a little earlier, but I didn't love it when she would be up at 6 or 6:30.

Firstly, you may need to adjust your expectations about what is a normal nap. I have always been amazed at how long Georgia sleeps - she seems to have longer naps than the average baby I know her age. Sad, I know, but with my little girl and all the ones I know around her age (between 1 - 2), a 2 hour nap is a really good one.

Secondly though, and on the bright side, my daughter went through something really similar. Despite being happy to go to sleep, she was sleeping less and when she woke up, was quite inconsolable for about 15 - 20 minutes. She began to wake earlier and earlier. Eventually, she got to having just one sleep cycle of 45 minutes and wanting to get up, and I knew THAT wasn't right. So, I started to go in and say to her, "You haven't had a long enough sleep, you need to go back to sleep for a while longer". It took a few days of crying, but she got the message and would even just lie back down as soon as she saw me enter the room. Eventually, she began to settle herself and we are back to 1.5 - 2 hour naps with only an occasional early waking (where I repeat the same routine). Hope you find something that works!

I agree with above. My baby is the same age as Georgia and she has NEVER taken 3 hour naps! Maybe if she was sick but hardly ever... Plus the older they get the less they sleep during the day! You might just have to get used to the fact that a 2 hour nap might be her norm!

Also I have learned with my kids.... They are always changing you just have to go with it... As soon as you get used to one schedule they grow or change and you just learn to adapt! Hope you figure it out! Good luck!
