De-Swaddle!

October 11, 2011

Ding-Dong the swaddle is GONE!

As of October 5th to be exact.

Here's how it went down.

The night of October 4th/Morning of October 5th Georgia woke up 4 times...yes FOUR times in the middle of the night because she was rolling over to her tummy while swaddled.  (And I might add my husband is the rock star who got up with Georgia those FOUR times)  Annoying and unsafe all at the same time.  So, we decided to go cold turkey and unswaddle her for the next night.

And, her naps had been getting REALLY bad lately so our thinking was:  she isn't napping well while swaddled and now she isn't sleeping at night while swaddled and the point of swaddling her is for all of us to get more sleep.  If that isn't happening why are we still doing it???

So, cold turkey she went.

We put her down at 8pm and she woke up at 9pm and at 10pm and then not again until 6:30 the next morning.  Granted, that is an hour before she normally gets up but pretty darn good considering she had never slept unswaddled before (well, not in the past 2 months she hadn't).  Also, I went to check on her at 5:30 (to see what position she finally settled on) and like I suspected she was sound asleep on her tummy...which is fine with me.

The next night she only woke up around 9 I think, and then again at 10 but she just flipped over, talked to herself for awhile, and fell back asleep until the morning.

I might also add we changed to breathable bumpers (so ugly and blah!) because since she can now move many times I have found her face first into her bumpers.  A good friend of mine from high school nearly lost her son due to suffocation this way (rushed to the hospital not breathing) so I quickly removed the old ones and bought the breathable ones.

The only issue we have now is her arm gets caught between the side rails under the bumper pad.  It is SO annoying.  Usually, it just happens at nap time and I just move her arm and she falls right back to sleep but this morning it happened at 5 and took me an hour and a half to get her back to sleep...she thought it was time to get up but it SO WAS NOT!

So, tomorrow will mark one week with no swaddle and it's going pretty well.  Still some kinks to work out, clearly, but we're getting there and she is now continuing with her 11 hours of usual sleep.  Praise God!

Oh my gosh, that must have been so horrible for your friend! I'm glad her little one is okay. Yeah, I hate the way our breathable bumpers look, too. Oh, well. Better safe than pretty!

I've been thinking about doing that as well. I hope it goes as well as it did for you!

She will adjust to the breathable bumpers and won't get her arms and legs stuck in there soon, I promise! My sister decided to change her bumpers the night before I was to stay with her 3 kids for a week, joy!...after a couple of days she adapted to the change and I didn't have to go in every few hours to remove her chunky arm or leg from the crib.
Sounds like you guys are doing a great job figuring out what works for Georgia!

11 hours of straight sleeping, I am jealous! I have a 7 week old and we're still on the 3-3.5 hours of sleep at a time.
