A rant!

February 7, 2012

I've written before about the fact that I have hypothyroidism.  It's a condition in which the thyroid gland does not make enough thyroid hormone.  People who have hypothyroidism may also be anemic (check) and have elevated cholesterol (double check).  In addition, other complications could be heart disease or failure, increased risk of infection, infertility, miscarriage, and giving birth to a baby with birth defects.

Lovely...

At first I didn't think it was really a big deal.  I still don't think it's that big of a deal but it is a huge annoyance and pain in the butt!  I have to go get blood work-go to the doctor-and get blood work done again at the dr's appointment every three months.  So, every three months I have to visit the dr. and give blood twice.  I hate it.  No, actually I LOATH it.  Especially with my history of passing out.  It's always a constant worry.  And, I'll have to do that pretty much the rest of my life!

And, I have to take my hormone replacement pill every morning (FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE!) one hour before I eat.  So, I usually roll out of bed (because I have to take it with a full glass of water), take the pill, crawl back in bed for another hour, try to fall back asleep but I never can, then get up and eat breakfast.

I know other people have it way worse but I wish it was different.  I wish I wasn't so tired all the time.  I wish I didn't have to go to the doctor all the time and pay for so many appointments.  I wish I didn't have to take that stupid tiny pill every morning and go to CVS to pick it up and pay for it every month.  I wish the decision to quit breastfeeding could have been totally my own and not been made by a stupid thyroid condition.  The only way to 100% successfully breastfeed with hypothyroidism is if your levels remain on track.  I gave birth nearly 9 months ago and and every time I go in for blood work my levels have changed and they have had to change my hormone dosage at every appointment.  My doctor said this typically levels out after a year.  They've raised the dosage, then lowered it, then lowered it some more, then raised it again, and raised it again.  It makes no sense.  Ugh...I wish I didn't have to have neck ultrasounds to make sure I don't have enlarged glands or tumors.  I wish I hadn't lost so much weight that the "air bag off" symbol didn't come on whenever I ride in the passenger seat.

It's all really annoying.

Blah.

Rant. Over.

Emily I totally feel your pain. I go to the endo every 3months for type 1 diabetes and hypothyroidism. They take huge amounts of blood every.sinlge.time. Luckily for me, since I have been on this schedule since I was in 6th grade it seems normal. I wouldn't know what to do if I did not have all these Dr. appointments. Also thankfully, I am very healthy and all my levels are a-okay and normal. WOO!!! Don't let this get you down, its so minor!! :)

Ugh...that is NO fun! :-( My mom had her thyroid removed years ago from problems she was having so she has to take that fun little pill as well :-( I hope you can get this sorted out to BF with the next little one!

Oh girl, I can completely relate!! I have a condition known as Thalaseemia and I have to go get blood drawn AND get blood transfusions once a month! The transfusions alone take all day so we're very lucky my parents live nearby and can watch the baby(s) while I'm gone all day... I also have to be on a medication (also 30 mins before I eat!) that they don't recommend taking while nursing so I could only BF for 3 months. I, too have days where I just wish I could ignore my condition and feel 100% ALL THE TIME. I'm sorry you're having a down day about it, but know you're not alone! :)

Wow!! I had no idea that that condition had so many complications that surrounds it or required so many dr visits!! Thanks for the post (I would be ranting too if I were in your shoes)..it was a good eye opener to a condition not often talked about!

I have hypothyroidism, too, and my life in that format very much resembles yours....it can be so very annoying!!! I'm due with our first child Feb 20th, and planning to breastfeed. I'm hoping that it works out for me, but if it doesn't, then I know there are other options out there. My dosage has changed more times during this pregnancy than it has in the last four years, so I'm nervous that breastfeeding won't work out. :( And yes, I hate that tiny little pill, too....but I hate the side effects if I miss it even more!!! I get up, take mine with a full glass of water before eating. The directions don't say to wait an hour before eating, but maybe I should....
